Gurdjieff had a concept of transcending suffering in ones quest of the perfected self documented by P.D. Ouspensky in his book, "In Search of the Miraculous." Gurdjieff called his transcendent process, "The Work" which referred to "work on oneself" or originally, "The Fourth Way." At one point he described his teaching as "Esoteric Christianity."
